My name is Charalambos Mandelenakis and I have been practicing the ancient profession of shepherd since 1973.
I follow the steps of the tradition that I have been taught by my father and grandfather, since I am a third generation shepherd and at the same time I teach the secrets of the profession to my son.
The farming method I specialize in is not very different from the ancient methods of sheep and goat farming followed by our ancestors, the Minoans. My sheep come from local Cretan ancient breeds, they are bred wild in nature, and the way I practice my profession is classic, traditional, followed for centuries, with minimal modern aids added to the whole process.
The place where my stockyard is located is at an incredibly amphitheatrical point at 850m. It has ancient energy, as on the perimeter of the stockyard, ancient Minoan stockyards have been found, proof of the history of the area and of the pastoral prehistory of the place.
I have insatiable thirst for knowledge, so I am studying psychology and animal psychology at the Open University of Crete. I also study the use of the local herbs and the positive effect they have on our health, while at the same time I write ‘mantinades’ (15-syllable rhyming couplets in Cretan dialect) and I play the thiaboli, the Cretan traditional descendant of the Minoan flute!
I invite you to get to know me so that I can pass on to you some of my knowledge and give you the chance to gain a very unique and different life experience!
